Falcons host Panthers this weekend

Defense is a major concern

The Atlanta Falcons (2-1, 1st NFC South) have rebounded from their opening loss to win two straight games and take over the NFC South.  While the offense is humming along at 438 yards a game, their defense is ranked near the bottom of the league, giving up 371 yards a game.  And defense wins championships.  Now come the Panthers (1-2, 3rd NFC South)

These two teams have a nice little history between them and have played falcons-442 times with the Falcons taking a 25-17 lead in the series.  While the Panthers record is under .500, they are favored in this match up by 3 1/2 because of that porous Falcons defense.  The Panthers, however, have a stiff defense, ranked 3rd in the NFL and is the best Atlanta has come across this season.

“An excellent defense,” QB Matt Ryan said of Carolina.  “I think their front seven does a great job both against the run and the pass. Two excellent linebackers. A front four that is very deep across the board. Those guys play extremely well. For us, it’s going to be important to play well up front and to prepare for their scheme. I think they do a great job of understanding their scheme and understanding the offenses that they’re going against.”

The game kicks off at Noon in the Georgia Dome.  Plenty of great seats and affordable tickets are still available so be sure to grab yours today and help cheer on your Atlanta Falcons this Sunday!

Falcons host Bucs in season opener

The Atlanta Falcons will welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday in the season opener for both teams.  The Falcons finished last season with an 8-8 record in the NFC South, which was an improvement from their 2014 6-10 record but still not anywhere near where they wanted to finish after starting 5-0.

The Falcons go into the season with one of the toughest schedules in the NFL but quarterback Matt Ryan thinks that if the defense can hold, he has enough weapons on the offensive side of the ball to get into the playoffs and beyond.

“We have to create some explosive plays,” Ryan said. “We are getting the ball down the field a little bit and that will help us falcons 3out. We have to be a little bit more consistent. There is no question about that.”

Coach Quinn also announced that rookie linebackers Deion Jones and DeVondre Campbell will start against the Bucs.  Coach Quinn also stated that OG Chris Chester has won his position and will again get the start at right guard.

As for the schedule, coach Quinn seemed more excited then weary of the schedule that has three of first four games divisional matches.

“It’s going to be awesome,” Quinn said. “I love the way that the league has set that up where three of the four are right off the bat. It’s an area we didn’t do a good enough job last year. We struggled against our very own division, which is a tough one.”
